Here's a hypothetical question: If at this very moment a deranged millionaire phoned you up and told you that today he was going to destroy Homestar Runner or the Homestar Runner Wiki Forum, and that it was up to you to choose which one to save, which one would you choose?

You may only choose to save one, and there is absolutely no way to thwart or otherwise change the Deranged Millionaire's evil plan. The site you don't choose will be totally erased from existence forever, including all cached/archived/hard copies or saved files everywhere, as well as any DVDs, CDs, t-shirts, etc. that anyone owns.

TELL WHAT U THINK!

The wiki forum.

I've met so many people here, I could never part with all of you.

*hugs the wiki and everyone in it*

What would I do, eh? Well, you have to figure that without H*R, this forum would have never had existed. So if you eliminate H*R, you're basically eliminating the forum as well, right?

...Hard choice....
But I do admit.
I like Homestar runner.
But this forum changed me and kept me from becoming overdepressed.

mmm....I'm gonna have to go with the forum on this one mainly because I'm more of a forum junkie than an actual homestar fan. I still am a HR fan anyways.
Bye bye HR.... :p

No, the Deranged Millionaire is not a time-traveler and cannot erase history--he can only destroy what exists in the present.

Defenitely the H*R. The forum is simply a forum, it can always be recreated. The cartoons on H*R are priceless.

The forum. Homestar Runner is something to watch and talk about. Without homestar runner, we couldn't talk about homestar runner.

But without the forum, we couldn't talk about ANYTHING, as this is how we keep in contact.

He would delete the new version.

I never said that. But anyway, I don't agree with Ju Ju Master's idea that "it can always be recreated." Sure, you could put up a forum with the exact same name, design and sub-forums as the original, but would you still have the same community? The same history? The same "feel"? Nuh-uh. You'd be starting from scratch, with zero users and zero posts. Sure, a lot of the users would come along to the new site (if you could get in contact with them), but it would never be even a good approximation of the old community.

(Not to mention that whenever a big community is closed, there's never just one site that tries to replace it--you end up with half a dozen competing communities. Eventually all but one or two of them die, but by then the damage is done.)

Me? I would explode.

No, just kidding. I would probably choose the Wiki Forum. But it would be painful to part with Teh Homestaw Runnew.

Thankfully, these hypothetical things usually don't happen. And even if one of them DOES vanish, it won't be because of some Deranged Millionaire. And I'd still have the DVDs.

I've been through forums with totally awesome communities (no more than a few thousand people, with hundreds of regular posters, and shiploads of very close friendships) that have had to, for one reason or another, get rid of their boards and start with a new forum. Nothing saved--everyone has to reregister and start from scratch all over again. And the communities pulled through, and within a month, that feeling of community was back again...only with some people's added excitement of the new place and/or lament of losing the old place.

So I'd get rid of the forum. We could rebuild. Rebuilding the original HSR, though, would be a lot harder. Before I had my own computer, I was using the family computer to write music. One day, my mother decided she needed to reformat the computer...and without consulting me (or anyone else), she just went ahead and did it without saving anything. I lost all my original music as well as digital photos I took from my trip to Germany--stuff I could never get back and still have never gotten back. Keep HSR. Rebuild the forum.

I'd keep the H-star-R. Even if the forum didn't have all the old posts saved and such when it was recreated, all the juys would still be there and it would still be a great place to be.

hmm... which isa the lesser of two evils, i would save the forum because like Einoo said, the DVD's are always there and this forum can keep me occupied all day, while I cant watch the same toons all day every day.

Incorrect, EInoo and Chekt.

Anyways,

Ah, I disagree. The WikiForum would be destroyed, but the wiki would be untouched. Mosdt people who would try to go to the forum and find it down would then head to the wiki to a) see if it was a problem throughout all of hrwiki.com, or b) see what the problem was. The wiki could simply have an announcment pointing peoiple to the new forum, and the majority of the users would be back. You're right, it wouldn't be the same, but the fix would be much better than losing H*R.

Okay, I'm gonna tweak the situation: The Deranged Millionaire would also make sure no forum was ever recreated at this address (or anywhere at hrwiki.org). forum.hrwiki.org would be vanquished forever, and no page anywhere on hrwiki.org could link or even allude to any new forum.

I made my choice just by which gives me more enjoyment on a weekly/daily basis. Even the very best H*R week gives me an hour of fun a week? That's only if I watch the new stuff multiple times, and spend a bit of time talking with others about how sweet the update was.

I spend lots more time here. I mean, without this forum, I'd be totally bored everyday that isn't monday or a small part of thursday.

Now, I suppose there is a qualitative measure along with the quantitative one. Quantitatively, the forum gets way more of my time than H*R does. However, I've laughed harder at many many more H*R things than Forum stuff. Plenty of chuckles here, but not nearly as many laugh out louds.

They'd be destroyed, too. He has super powers, apparently. he doesn't even need to be a millionaire.

Well, we'd either just set up a forum for HR fans totally independent of the Wiki...or if the Millionaire's super magic powers extend that far to prevent ANY HR-fan forum from EVER being reproduced ever again, then we'd all find a way to meet up IRL and party, boogie, and buttdance again (like the rhythm's down our pants :hr: ). And as long as it's in a public place, it'd be totally legal in America thanks to the freedom of assembly deal in the 1st Amendment. And if the Millionaire tries to do anything further to disrupt that, then I'll kick his Millionaire butt. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, IJ, but guys, I don't think the question is really "which would be the easiest to reproduce later" as much as "If you had to live the rest of your life without one or the other, which would you cut out?" The framing was just more creative.

So all of these "What if magic happened and all of us ended up on the same forum some other place" questions are a bit irrelevant to the matter at hand, it seems.

But man, that Deranged Millionaire. First, making TMBG record all of those venue songs, and now this! WHERE WILL HE STRIKE NEXT?

Aw peas. I like loopholes. Then I'd probably change my vote to the forum. I spend a lot more time here than I do at H*R.

Well, if there's no hope of ever getting the lost site back, then I'd change my vote to the Forum. I would absolutely totally die without this place.

Someone remember this poll at the next awards. This is the best one I've seen in a long while.

As for my decision, I'd save the forum. Homestar is a great, great site, but the forum has become such a large part of my life. Even if it could magically be re-created somewhere else, it wouldn't have the same flair.

I hate to say it, but I'd choose to destroy here. If H*R got destroyed, then this place would still go, then both sites would be gone. So, either way, the forum loses.

We could still reminice about it, although I do agree that Joey might not want to keep a website about something that doesn't exist.

Would our H*R emoticons dissappear too?
