Gunsmoke was the longest running show. The still longest running TV show is The Simpsons (I think) so do you think it will break the record?
I do.

I don't think the producers will be happy until they've shattered Gunsmoke's record. They made a bit of a big fuss when they beat out The Flinstones as the longest-running cartoon series.

Well Simpsons has been renewed through its twentieth season, which will tie it with Gunsmoke. They wouldn't stop at a tie.

Exactly what I was going to say. They are going to beat it, unless something unpredictable happens between now and then.

Like the decline of Simpson watchers? Kind of late to say that. I stopped watching a while ago.

Hey, I still watch the Simpsons. Almost religiously when there's new episodes, even. Now, I'm smart enough to tell they aren't overall as good as they used to be, but they still have the potential to make good ones. Remember the one where Bart attends a rap concert? That was a-good.

The Simpsons will beat Gunsmoke.

That pretty much sums up my opinion, too. Theyr'e not as good as they once were, but they sill have their moments.

And yeah, I also think Simpsons will beat Gunsmoke. No way they'll give up willingly (If they're forced to give up, like Groening dying, that's not really willingly)

How much does Groening even do for the show anymore?

The Simpsons will keep going until all possible mathematical permutations of story have been created. Then they'll do some clip shows.

It'll keep running until everybody hates it and then some.

I'm pretty sure The Simpsons has a contract with Fox for at least two more seasons. I've heard Groening say he wants to go to at least season 20. So, yeah, I think it'll beat Gunsmoke.

Are we just talking about fictional TV series here? News shows like Meet The Press and The Today Show(okay, I use the term 'news' loosely there) have been on at least since the fifties.

Yeah, KS, I think the whole idea is that The Simpsons is in the running for longest-running sitcom, not longest-running TV show in general.

I am starting to record the simpsons again on my tivo, and I take back what I said. Its pretty good. But the season premiere episode guest stars people from the Sopranos. This made me think which Simpsons season premeire does not have guest stars?

Not counting the series premire, seasons 2,4,6,and 9 as far as I know. Around the twelfth season, the show kind of made a habit of having some big guest stars pop up in the season openers. I'm not counting the Treehouse of Horror eps because they were usually non-canon and sometimes premiered weeks before the start of the actual season.

Toastpaint.

More like, which Simpsons episode doesn't have big guest stars these days. In the last five or so seasons they keep hyping up celebrities who really only come on and say "Hi, I'm a celebrity!"

I remmeber that they did once in an older episode - it was The Barbershop Quartet one. A famous musician(forget who) walked on and said his name and told Homer where the brownies were.

I liked that.

Dude, it was George freaking Harrison! How could you forget George Harrison? Bad boy!

Yeah, at the rate they're going they will. Or at least tie. I'd prefer they tie. 20 is a nice round number.

That one was kinda funny just because the entire plot was Homer's band emulating the Beatles' success.

Do I think it will beat gunsmoke? Yes. But it will not last much longer. I do not think so.

NOTE: This is from my sister, a die-hard simpson's fan, not from me.

Anyways, she told me that the producer once said that once a simpson's official movie comes out that will be the end. There have been rumours of one that will be starting within the next few years...

Have you not heard? They've already started. In fact, there's even a teaser trailer for it.
