It's so hard to choose. But pirates are cool enough.

Um... the truth about pirates is almost as boring. Plus, ninjas and pirates were pretty much the same people just on different parts of the world. They were both groups of the lower class sick of being trapped by the nobles in a crappy position who felt that violence and lawbreaking were the only ways out. But one group came up in the west and one in the east, one on sea, one on land.

The whole ninja v. pirates thing isn't about what they were in reality anyway

..actually...

Ninjas were hired merceneries paid to kill some businessman by whoever wanted it.

Pirates actually did loot varous treasures and got away on boats. And yes, they did also hide them under X's - at least one person did, anyways.

So ninjas = mercenery. Pirate = theif.

Theives are cooler.

Seriously. Ninjas were mercerneries/assassins, while pirates were theives.

I didn't ruin it, I told you what it was. So don't get all mad at me.

Well, there are a few fanmade ones to parody the Ninja one. But until my eye patch comes in the mail, you all will just have to wait.

Noid, there's no reason to get all uptight about the "fake ninja image". So people have stretched the truth. So what? You say people get misled by Naruto, but they can just as easily get misled by One Piece. Neither of those have any real basis in historical fact, but the fact of the matter is, they're entertaining. I don't watch either of them to learn how it was in ninja or pirate life. I watch them because they're interesting and entertaining. It's a cartoon. There's no reason to get all uptight about it not being historically accurate.

You can't say ninjas had no skill, either. Ninjas had to be incredibly skilled. To be an assasin/mercinary, you think it's all luck? No chance in hell. First off, you wouldn't get hired if you didn't have skill. Secondly, you'd have to be skilled to be an assasin. Could you blunder into a castle aimlessly, throw a shuriken blindly, and take out your target? No, you couldn't.

You also insist on them being "liars". Have historical ninjas ever said that they've killed tons of people? Is there any historical records of ninjas bragging about summoning animals, using "justsu" and other magic? No! So Naruto says they can summon a toad. That doesn't mean anything. Don't judge that by someone saying that they are a ninja or that they like ninjas means that they believe that Ninjas = Naruto. I'm sure that in most cases, that isn't true. The ninja stereotype is not Naruto. As you can plainly see, none of the "ninjas" in this thread (or any other thread for that matter) say that they can take you out with a magic spell. They go for the much more likely route of killing you in your sleep.

If you're going to get angry at people for not making their argument on historical facts, you have to be just as angry at this entire debate. Wikipedia weighs in:

Wikipedia wrote:
Pirates versus Ninjas or vice versa refers to a joke about a supposed debate in various internet subcultures. The meme raises the question: Who would win in a fight, pirates or ninja? The question's humor is partly based on the fantasy that pirates and ninjas are two of the most formidable opponents in physical combat, as well as the fantasy that both groups of fighters are supremely masculine. However, because both pirates and ninjas have been heavily stereotyped in video games, movies, and television shows, many people use these stereotypes to make a quasi-logical argument in favor of one over the other for comedic value. The debate assumes that both pirates and ninjas are as represented in popular culture, rather than in history (for example that ninjas wear black and that pirates say "Arrrr!").

The whole debate is a gag based on stereotypes. Neither pirates or ninjas were exceptional in one-on-one combat. Ninja's can't use magic, pirates don't eat mystical fruit and say things like "AVAST! YARR!" And therein lies the humor of it.

Before any piratey types get to say it: the shuriken was never used to "take anyone out". Generally, all they did was cause a scratch and pain and bounce off. If you throw a bunch of them from different angles at night (ninjas actually traveled in groups), you give the illusion that some invisible ninja is slashing you up with a sword. Ninjas were liars? Of course they were. They were awesome at creating the illusion that they were magical, which created fear in their opponents. The lies were effective psychological warfare. Ninjas each usually had their own special skills. One would be good at climbing and something else and another good at swordfighting and another.. etc.. and they'd travel in a group and each would use their certain skills, which they were very good at. They all had to be at least decent at sneaking though.

But once again, for most people this "rivalry" isn't about what ninjas or pirates actually were, but about which fictional character type people prefer.

Author:  Acekirby [ Tue Aug 22, 2006 7:57 pm ]
Post subject:

I don't think the ninjas themselves were liars...I think they created an illusion and people fell for it. And those who were witnesses spread the rumors about ninjas being magic. I think calling them liars insinuates the fact that they would say "I killed him with a thousand knives and summoned a giant toad" (I doubt ninjas would talk about their ninja life), instead of the person being sliced with a lot of knives from multiple individuals and seeing a rather large toad.

Pirates were a lot like them. You can't say you've never heard pirate legends, like "He has a thousand ships under his control" or "He strikes on the full moon, and if you see him, you're dead". Blackbeard the pirate anyone? There's also Pirates of the Carribean, which has a bunch of magic and whatnot.

But we seem to be agreeing on the central focus point, that the debate is based on which stereotype is your favorite, and that neither stereotype has much basis on historical facts.

(I'm a pirate, btw)

Ace, sheesh. I'm not being serious at all here. I just like poking fun at the two warriors and how different they are from their intended purpose.

I'm not purposely being uptight. I just like pointing out little things, like "oh, that wouldn't really happen" when a group of people got defeated by a ninja throwing shurikens.

I'm not purposely insisting that they were liars. I'm just saying that most of the stuff they said were stuff that has a good chance of being lies, such as ninjas being able to summon toads(which...I'm not sure how it is helpful in the first place.) And most of the time I've seen people making their online alias a ninja based off of what they saw from Naruto.

I know that the whole thing is a battle of the jokes, but I'm not purposely yelling "LIES!" at them like you're kind of saying I am. I just want to know if they know what a traditional style is(meaning outside of the ninjas vs. pirates debate).

In other words, this is what, the fifth time I've gotten yelled at in a few paragraphs post? I'm just going to keep my freaking mouth shut if I peeve you off so much.

Heh. In class, there was a pirates vs. ninjas thing on the board. Pirates had 3, ninjas had 2 (it was a small class). I wonder how that got on there. It's weird how internet things suddenly spring up every once in a while (Pirates vs. Ninjas, Snakes on a Plane, pwning)

Ninjas ARE pirates of a sort.

Both could sometimes be hired to do one's bidding.

Neither group had any kind of standardized dress (unlike the movie versions of both).

Both groups used whatever weapon they could find, and if they can't find a weapon, they use whatever happens to be laying around.

Both groups used unconventional tactics.

Ninjas=Pirates.

HI-Y'AARR!

I think the stereotypical ninja would kill the pirate. The pirate would go wobbling around on his peg-leg and say, "you scum eating landlubber," while swinging his giant sword around. The ninja would manuver around the ship and do a couple flips and eventually stab the pirate. But realistically, it would be either way. Maybe the pirate, because they had pistols.

I voted ninja. I don't really care if they aren't really what people consider them to be, it's the idea of a ninja that matters. For example, if there was a poll debating horses vs. unicorns, unicorns would win by a landslide, even though they don't exsist. (or DO they?!?!? :p) Not to mention that the common idea of pirates, too, is composed of a lot of fiction. In fact, you could say we're debating two things that no one truely knows about! How wierd is THAT!?! ;)

EDIT: GAH!!!!! I FORGOT TO READ THE SECOND PAGE OF THIS TOPIC!!!!!!!!! EVERYTHiNG I SAiD hAS ALreADY BEEN SAID!!!

But I shall keep it up here, since it took me a while to type and it makes a good point.
