In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history... or at least in most primitive cultures, people used to change their names alot. Your parents named you when you were born, but that was just for convenience. People ended up with multiple names throughout their lives that actually related to who they had become instead of what their parents thought sounded nice. Many people have nicknames, but you often can't use those in more formal or official settings. So we can be stuck with names that are very impersonal because they have nothing to do with us. Now add in the internet, where you get to choose your own name, and it's possible that your real name will start sounding very strange to you. Maybe you'd rather be called something else! Me: my real name doesn't mean anything to me, plus my family name is hideous in an English speaking country (and I'm able to explain exactly how in linguistic terms), plus it might mean "slum lord" or something. I'd just change my name to my screen name if it wouldn't make functioning in "legitimate" society very awkward So what about you? Would you like to be called something different? What would you choose? Why? Fine with what you got? Why? Whatever? Huh? (If you would agree with both "no" answers, pick "cool with my current name". If you would agree with both "yes" answers, pick "I don't know what I'd change it to") |

I voted "Yeah, but I dont know what to" selection. I dont like the name Phillip (my current name) but every other cool name doesnt sound good with my last name (Which I am not telling you) and I dont wanna change my last name, it is dumb but it is still the family name and all... And I am to embarassed to say the names that I have thought of. |

First names mean nothing, so I don't see the point in changing them. Yes, I don't like my first name. But it's not me. Heck, I wouldn't change my name if I were named "Stinkbutt". ...Okay, I might. |

I've never thought too highly of my name (Tim), but it's not bad. I like my name more than I used to, probably because I was called "Timmy" back then. I'm not psyched about the name Tim, but I wouldn't bother changing it. |

Ha. I had to write an essay on this like two weeks ago. It went something to the effect of, "I don't love my name to the point where I'd never change it, but no other name I can find feels like ME." |

Like Josefine, Sophie (which I'm usually called,) Soph, Sofie, Sofi, and SO MUCH MORE!!! CALL IN THE NEXT 10 MINUTES AND WE'LL ADD THE JOSIE ATTACHMENT TOO!!!

When I get married, I want to change my last name to my wife's last name instead of the other way around. |

I already have, sort of. I like my given name (George), but I've always really liked the name Malcolm, and I even go by that name in a few other circles online, so that's what they call me. |

I have a slightly unusual second name, which I've used as my "real name" all my life; a very common first name; and a surname that is one letter away from a common surname. It does inspire a *lot* of confusion. |

I really want to change my first name, since it feels a bit embarassing, but I don't know what's a less common name than that. Plus, it means "Beautiful", which I doubt physically. And maybe mentally as well. |

My real name's Tim. I like it, but if I had to change it, I'd probably change it to something like Jack or Kyle. Those are cool names. |

You could change it to Serenade and start dressing like a chick! I DID change my name...sorta. See, my given name (and my legal name) is Johanna. The H is silent. But people misspelled it all the time and mispronounced it even more often, and I think it's a crappy name anyway. So I'm Anna now. Much better, and Anna Nickel is a kickawesome name. 'Cept on the listing for students of the month they wrote "Anna Nicole" instead. Bah. I don't like her so much. But come on. NICKEL. That's a sweet last name. And I can combine it seamlessly with Myrrh's! LAURANNA STERNICKEL!' But for some reason, some people keep mispronouncing Anna, too. They say "AW-nuh" instead of "AN-nuh". Like, pronouncing the first A like the A in "dawn" instead of the A in "plan". Kinda annoying. Also, it's true. Mandy's not my real name. But I've been using it on forums and such since...always. |

Nah, I'm cool with my first name. Being the only H. Simpson in the phone book does get a little tiring, though. As for when I get married, I'ma change my last name. I actually just heard that a guy I used to go to school with recently got married, and he and his wife both legally changed their names to a hyphenated name - his first, then hers. Prooty cool. The Botfriend's last name is Nault. That causes a lot of mispronunciations. It's "no". Not nawlt, nee-awlt, nee-oh, or any other crap. Why can people pronounce "Arsenault" without problems, but once the arse comes off, it's too difficult?? |

I don't think I would chane my name. It's uncommon, which I think signifies my uniqueness. Also people can go "SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE!!!1one1" If I had to change my name, I'd change it to Tim. Tim = pwnsome name. |

Yep. Having Tim as a name is pretty cool. 'Cept for back then, when everyone called me Timmy. Then people would call me "Timmy Turner," or "TIMMEH!" or "Timmy Neutron," which annoyed the crap out of me. |

Yeah, I really don't like my name. My first name sounds way too stupid, and rhymes with the wrong words, and my last name is always misspelled and mispronounced. |

Well, it would seem that this topic is causing tons of people to reveal their last names. But those who don't are fine. I really don't see why everyone here that hates their name could hate their name. |
