What religion do you adhere to, if any?

I think it may be interesting to see how many different religions we have represented here. Remember, keep this thread clean -- no religious discrimination.

I'm Southern Baptist (Protestant Evangelical Christian).

Nondenominational Christianity.

That just means we don't hold denominational affiliations such as Babtist or Methodist or stuff like that.

We have contemporary praise sessions and whatnot. I sing and play guitar at my church. Lotsa fun.

Vineyard!
Nondenominational & all that, but not to the extreme some people that it.
Basicly, if we read it in the Bible, its true & we do it. I like it. :)
We have like 4 diffrent worship leaders & they alternate (so none of them get burned out), so the style of the music changes some from week to week.

I play the drumset at my church. It's fun. I just recently volunteered to be part of the website administration team too.

LDS. What, you don't know what LDS means? Oh, fine. I'm Mormon. Trust me, we're a lot different than most people think.

What I meant by that was that we're a lot less weird than most people think. Probably the weirdest thing about us is that we don't drink coffee.

I play the organ at an American Baptist church. Ideologically, I tend to lean toward Methodism, though.

And I have some friends who are LDS and some who are Mormon... believe me, there's a big difference. For one thing, LDS folks don't do the whole polygamy thing generally, but the guy I know who's a straight-out Mormon does. Or maybe he just likes the ladies. :)

Erm, LDS does equal Mormon. There are just a lot of different people who happen to be Mormon, so you're going to get people all across the spectrum.

I thought LDS was a split from the original Mormons... at least that's what my "old-school Mormon" friend said...

It depends on who you talk to, Perez. There are many splinter Latter Day Saint groups in Missouri and the surrounding area. They all claim to be the original Mormon church, while the LDS church headquartered here in Salt Lake also claims to be the original Mormon church.

The LDS church here in Salt Lake is certainly the biggest, and they are probably one of the only ones still holding onto the original Mormon teachings (other than polygamy). Many of the splinter groups have denounced the Book of Mormon and other major teachings of Joseph Smith, the original Mormon prophet.

There are also several splinter polygamist groups in Southern Utah who also claim to have the more correct interpretation of Mormon teachings.

Hmmm, not much diversity yet.

Yet another Christian here. I've been part of Presbyterian (PC USA), nondenominational / evangelical, Pentecostal, and Presbyterian (PCA) churches. Except for infant baptism and some strict Calvinist doctrines, I find my thinking best represented by the reformed / conservative Presbyterians (PCA).

I volunteer in middle school youth ministry, and occasionally I play hammered dulcimer for church services.

I think the more diverse ones are just hanging by the sidelines to see how things go. I haven't posted because, having no religion, I don't have much to add to the conversation just yet. And I'm more than a little concerned about where the conversation will head if particular narrow-minded people decide to chime in. But so far it looks like smooth sailing; I'm impressed.

By the way, the dulcimer is a great instrument.

Anyway, athiest here. ;)

I am a Christian belonging to no specific church. In my city (the smallest city in England(e)) we have many different churches, we've got an Anglican church, a united reformist church, a Catholic church, and even a cathedral (Which is the reason why we are a city.) I got to no church, as I believe in the sanctity that I keep my faith with me at all times.
I really do not mind about other people's religions. I respect each of their point of views, as we are all common in worshipping one primal God. I also don't mind atheists. That's considering that they don't make fun of me for what I believe (Which some do. A lot.) and they are TRUE to atheism. (Meaning, they don't celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc.)
Oh, and if you do consider yourself atheist, but still celebrate Christmas, then that's OK with me. Perhaps you just celebrate it for family values, which really count. I'm just saying that atheists shouldn't laugh at Christians for what they believe.

I agree totally. The one thing I can't stand is people mocking others' beliefs. I myself am an athiest, but I respect whatever belief you might have. And I do celebrate Christmas... it's all commercial now anyway.

I celebrate what I like to call "Giftmas" .. it's a holiday that happens to fall on the same day(s) as Christmas and feature a lot of the same traditions, namely family, joy, and togetherness, but without all the dogma.

Polytheist! Stemming from my philosophy that if the world was the work of just a single deity life, the world and the universe would contradict itself far less often. ;)

Lots and lots of gods out there with their own agenda's. Some like us humans, others hate our guts. Why else would people sometimes win first class tickets to Hawaii only for the plane to crash into the pacific?

Hey it happens!

And why else would everything that taste's good or is fun be bad for you?
Sure you can say God and the Devil, but even that just won't do since life is all to often as incoherent as one of those incoherent movies that's incoherent because it had seven or more people writing the script.

I am telling you, oodles of gods!

No but seriously... I am an agnostic. But I respect people's rights to hold their beliefs and I don't make fun of them unless they are really asking for it (either by trying to annoyingly convert me or telling me I am going to hell, or by being loud and obnoxious in public, such as by stating all atheists go to hell or that its a tragedy if people don't believe in God. I mean, if someone demands respect for his beliefs but obviously doesn't respect what others think, he's fair game IMHO.)

But as long as people respect my (lack of) beliefs, I respect their beliefs. But I do think turnabout is fair game. ;) Although admittedly, better done in private then on forums.

Atheist here. My philosophy on Christmas is pretty much the same as Interruptor Jones: it's so commercialised nowdays that you can celebrate nearly all of it without even involving Jesus at all.

Before I leave, I am Christian and belong to a Presbyterian church.

upiliston and IJ, I belive that Christmas falls at the wrong time. Theologians say Jesus was only conceived in December, but was born in September.

Does anyone actually have any evidence as to when Jesus was born? And does it actually matter?

The traditional Christmas story deviates from the biblical narrative on many points. For instance, the Bible records that the wise men didn't come to visit Jesus until two or three years after his birth, yet they are traditionally depicted as being there at the manger scene. In addition to this, it is almost universally accepted that there were three wise men, while the Bible is silent on the number. It almost seems from the Biblical narrative that there were many more than simply three wise men.

The most obvious indication (in my opinion) that he wasn't born in December was that the shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks in the fields. These would have to be some very strange shepherds to take their flocks to pasture in the middle of winter.

For a more complete treatment of this question, I'll refer you to an article I found using Google: "On What Day Was Jesus Born?". I haven't had time to check the accuracy of this article, so I won't claim that it proves anything, but I think it gives you a generally good picture of where people are coming from when they claim that Christ was born in September-October rather than in December.

Upsilon wrote:

No, there really is no practical application of this. Christmas can still be celebrated in December as a memorial to Jesus' birth. If people want to get legalistic and claim that Christians should not celebrate Christmas because it was adapted from a Pagan holiday, that is their prerogative. As for me, I believe I'm free in Christ and can celebrate his birth any day of the year. December 25 is as good a day as any.
