Has anyone ever tried figuring out what the total combined running time of all the E-mails, toons, shorts, etc. on H*R is, even including toons not currently on the site? I don't think I'd ever try and add this up myself, but I'm curious if any Wikigoers with no life have, and what it approximately is. I dunno... I personally think it would be kind of a neat thing to know. But then I'm a nerd. ;)

There's a way to find out. The wiki has a running time on everything on the website, so just add them up.

We had a snow day about a month ago, and I watched all the Strong Bad Emails in one day. It took like 8 hours to watch them (counting supper and many breaks in between)

I'm guessing 12 hours.

Assuming this page is accurate and complete (and assuming my code is bug-free--hah!), some quality time with Ruby reveals that the total running time for all Strong Bad Emails (including bonus emails) is 21,261 seconds. That's 5 hours, 54 minutes, and 21 seconds (5:54:21).

You're on your own with the rest. :)

I'd be happy to do something like shorts or something. I have nothing to do tonight so I could be done by tommorow.

I'm going to estimate along the lines of eightish hours. Which is pretty good, for a webtoon.

I don't know exactly what Ruby is, but I'm going to assume it makes things shorter than manually entering in every SBEmail time. Or, if that's what you do, it makes it as easy as that. And still, even if I sued the Windows calculator, it couldn't have taken more than a half-hour.

But there's no doubting Jones doesn't have a life.

It's a programming language. He must've made some program where he could copy-and-paste the page into it and it would find the email times and add 'em up automatically.

Don't forget, whatever totals you come up with (Which I'm interested in seeing) most likely won't account for easter eggs.

I used MS Excel and got ~5.9 hours so I'd say you're right.

I tried Excel but then couldn't figure out how to make it SUM times in mm:ss format, so I fell back on Ruby.

Code:
total = 0
times = %w{5:00 4:57 4:52 4:44} # and so on
times.each do |time|
  mins, secs = time.split(':')
  total = total + secs.to_i + mins.to_i * 60
end
puts total

Yay blocks!

My method was a little convoluted. The times pasted in as hours:min:sec so I changed the format to 'general' and then they displayed the time as fractions of a day ( Ithink). The numbers they displayed were 1/24th of email length in minutes. So I added the column, multiplied by 24, and divided by 60.

I've never heard of Ruby. Is it something like MATLAB?

Putting it another way, if you divided that 5:54, or 354 minutes, by around 21*, the Strong Bad E-mail series has run the equivalent of nearly 17 episodes of a TV show. If you also factor in the toons and shorts, there's probably a season or two more's worth added to that as well. Considering a good chunk of H*R stuff is done almost entirely by two people, that's a pretty darn good productivity rate if you ask me. And that's not even counting games or other extras.

* Note I say 21 minutes, because I figure that's the average length of a show not including the opening theme and closing credits, which SBemails don't have.

Ruby is a programming language, often compared to the likes of Perl and Python. I'm a huge fan.

Well, I might as well help out this worthy cause.

The total running time for the Big Toons is 50 minutes and 9 seconds. Add that to the total for the SBEmails (5 hours, 54 minutes, 21 seconds), and the final total for both the Big Toons and Strong Bad Emails is 6 hours, 44 minutes, and 30 seconds.

I'll try to do the shorts later.

EDIT: Okay, here's the shorts.

The total running time for the Short toons is 51 minutes and 36 seconds. Add that to the total of Big Toons and SBEmails combined (6 hours, 44 minutes, 30 seconds), and the final total for the Strong Bad Emails, Big Toons, and Small Toons put together is 7 hours, 36 minutes and 6 seconds.

Does that include Teen Girl Squads and Marzipan's Answering Machines?

Most of it is 2/3 minutes long. However full toons are mostly 5 mins.

CheezNapkin, while that banner is hilarious somehow, it's to big. We do have limitations.

Don't worry, your not the first, nor will you be the last.

He meant the total time of everything combined. It's a lot of time.

I'm curious how you'd go about working the multiple-choice Halloween specials into this calculation. Would you just figure out how much time all of its individual sections add up to? Or would you have to go through multiple times and work out the most time-economic way of viewing every single part of them (I'm thinking especially of Potion-Ma-Jig) and then add up all those times? In the former case I suppose you could probably use a flash-decompiler or something for that. The latter would take rather longer

Well, if we count of every bit of toonage, I'd guess you'd have to add up every bit of footage from those. *shrug*
