This may sound stupid and obvious, but I'm unclear of how to pronounce the word "wiki". In my head, I think of it as why-kee but I pretty sure it is suposed to be why-ky. Please help.

Thank you. :)

According to Wikipedia, there's no correct punctuation, but in English-speaking countries the two acceptable punctuations are "wicky" or "weekee".

I assume your bizarro "why-ky" pronunciation was inspired by "Hi-Fi" or "Wi-Fi", but the word Wiki bears no relation to those words, beyond the superficial.

Hmmm, I always thought of it as whi-kee ("whi" sounding like the "wi" in "with" and "kee" sounding like "key")

I always assumed "wicky", but was never sure. Glad you asked this question, Ricksea.

It depends on your native language.

I assumed "wicky" mostly because otherwise WikiTikkiTavi wouldn't have been so semi-clever.

I've always said it "wee-kee", since I though "WikiTikkiTavi" was "wee-kee tee-kee tavi".

I like that better that "wicky". But that's probably because I've said it that way for so long.

WikiTikkiTavi is a play on "Rikki Tikki Tavi", the title of a story by Rudyard Kipling and part of The Jungle Books, upon which the similary-named Disney cartoon was based. Since Rikki Tikki Tavi is pronounced "Ricky Ticky Tavvy", we can assume that the authors of WikiTikkiTavi intended it to be pronounced the same. Ergo "wicky".

Oh. I've never heard of of Rikki Tikki Tavi. I guess I should start saying it right.

I say wee-kee. I guess the reason I say it like that is because of the Hawaiian Tiki Dolls (pronounced tee-kee). So, instinctively, when I first saw the wiki, I pronounced it wee-kee.

Whoa, I told people it was Why-Ki. But this discussion is very Potato, Patato. It doesn't actually matter.

Yeah, me too. That's the way I always thought it was pronounced. But, before this wiki, I didn't even know what one was, nonetheless know how to pronounce it.

Yeah, me too. I think I'm gonna' stick with "wee-kee". "Wicky"pedia just sounds weird.

Ugh. So many "wee-kees" and "wickys"!

I always thought of it as whi-kee (whi as in which and key as in key) Is that right?

The correct pronounciation is "wicky" (e.g. rhymes with Vickey). End of story.

no. It's definently "weekee"
but it's not like you'll get in trouble or nuthing for saying it like "wykey" or "Wikki" or something like that, ok?

Now that's the first bit of sound reasoning I've seen yet in this thread. ikipapa1 is on to something.

At any rate, Senor is correct (and olene is just being pedantic) -- it really doesn't matter how you pronounce it. Weekee and Wicky are both valid options, but for all I care you can pronounce it "Bantha", 'cause we have the luxury of never having to hear eachother speak.
