If you want to go for a record, try three decades.

My friend has pulled so many all nighters since I've known him, and he's so smart that he could destroy the world with one single math equation.

Were they consecutive? Sleeping and recharging after one or two days of no sleep don't count. You gotta stay up nonstop till your brain functions start shutting down! I'm pretty sure there was this article about a guy who stayed up as long as he could...

Three days just running on 4 hours of sleep.

I ran on only 9 hours of sleep for two days. It was the weekend of a show too. Most awful thing ever.

Fascinating. Once we unlock the secret of how this guy is functioning normally with no sleep for 30 years, the entire human race can be created to never sleep. Or die, if it was done wrong on a massive scale.

But I like having dreams, so I'll pass.

I stayed up for 68 hours straight once. That was super special.
And then I crashed for about 15 hours.

I have absolutely no problem doing all-nighters. You know what my secret is?
Alcohol.

If I have a lot to drink, I can't sleep. Which is retarded because that is when most people get really tired.
A few times I've been over at friends' houses (because my parents don't let me drink so I have to do so elsewhere) and the more I have to drink, the harder it is to sleep.

Once I was with a group of about ten guys after a party, crashing at someone's house because they lived fairly close. They all went to sleep for about 5 hours, I did not sleep a wink. All night. It kinda sucked.

This doesn't happen so much these days, as I have figured out how to force myself to sleep by starting my dreams when I'm still awake. It works most of the time.

I'm in the middle of one right this moment.

I don't even know why, but I'm awake... and I felt the urge to dig up old forum accounts.

I has. Many a time, back in the day... No exciting stories involving it, though. Sorry.

Don't really need/want to do 'em anymore, though.

No...not yet. I see no point in staying up all night.

There often isn't one, because the productivity you gain tends to be lost afterwards. Not to mention that you'll also probably underperform during your all-nighter itself.

Knowing this doesn't keep me from pulling one on occasion. I don't decide "Hey, I'm gonna pull an all-nighter" (although I've done that in the past); what happens is I'm doing something -- often working on a programming problem -- and I don't find a good stopping point. So I just keep working and working and, before I know it, it's 6 AM. Oops. I try not to let it happen, but sometimes it still does.

I've never had to pull an all-nighter yet, though I bet there were a few times it would have benefited me. Like for my history final exam last semester. Worst exam ever.
