This Forum used to have an abundant supply of written works on it, though ever since The Purge, it seems like people haven't really cared about posting their pieces of writing on here. I hope to change that, but it requires the help of all of you.

If you have the time, I'd love it if you all could start composing new works of literature for here. Just about anything goes if you follow a few meager guidelines:
  1. Your work must either be a short story or a novel-like piece of writing. Things such as poems may work out, but they must be fairly detailed.
  2. Your work may cover any genre, though it must be almost completely original--fanfics and parodies are a no-no. You may do Forumfics (or related things) though, which involve a Forum and/or its people.
  3. You may not steal other peoples' written works; your story must be fully created by you.

Examples of written works already found on this Forum that could work out for this contest include The Abrupt End, SOUL, Chia Pet Says Moo, this, and most of the things here.

The users who enter this contest will be judged by me, which may or may not be a good thing. I'll try to be as open-minded as possible about entries, though certain things may strike my interests more than others. If there are enough entries, then I may get another judge, though this judge will not be able to enter the contest. Your entry will be judged by its plot the most, though other factors (such as your spelling and grammar) may affect your score.

Here are a few other things to note when participating in this contest:
  1. You may post your entries to this contest anywhere from Sunday, April 13, 2008 to Friday, June 20, 2008.
  2. Your entry must be in its own, individual thread with some mention of it being in this contest. You may combine all of your entries to one thread if you'd like, though it'd be appreciated if you linked to each of your entries through the first post of it.
  3. You must post in this thread with a link to your entry.
  4. You may have multiple entries, but their scores will be averaged together for the final score.
  5. If you are making a novel-like piece of writing, then it must have at least three chapters by this contest's end date, with updates occurring somewhat frequently throughout it (i.e. a new chapter every two or three weeks). I'd like it if you continued updating it even after this contest's end date, though.

Now, what is the prize for winning this?

Some of you are bound to know about the novel that I have been working on for nearly three years now entitled Midnight Hunters. It is a grand concept that has basically engulfed all of my writing ideas (minus most of SOUL) like a black hole. It is still in the planning process, but once I take the time to actually write it out, I'm sure many of you will consider it to be great.

I do not wish to reveal its main plot at this time, but those who saw its beginning stages years ago know it as a story involving people turning to the darkness of the night to kill each other over the most simple of things: golden cards known as Ranks. It is a story involving risk, temptations, life-changing decisions, survival when in the toughest of situations, among many other things.

The winner of this contest will be able to include themselves in this story as a vital character*. I will not say who this character is, but the winner will have the ability to tell me their name, physical characteristics, and personality. I will then use this provided information as a backbone for my own information about this character (meaning that some of your ideas may not be implemented, though some may). I will give the winner more details when that time comes.

*There must be a fair amount of entries for this main prize to work out. I'd say if there's more than eight entries, then I'll go ahead and use this prize.

I will probably make avatar/sig trophies for the winners, as well.

Feel free to ask me any questions about this contest. Good luck!

EDIT:While these are optional to use, here are a few prompts to possibly spawn some story ideas:

Prompt 1: To some, death is considered to be great. To others, death is considered to be scary, or even dreadful. Think of how your narrator or character deals with the idea of death, and if it ever actually affects them.

Prompt 2: There are many interpretations on who or what a hero is. Think of how your narrator or character can be a hero, whether its an obscure or general interpretation of the word.

Prompt 3: For thousands of years, human beings have mainly explored one place: the land. However, with new technology, other boundaries can be broken. Think of how your narrator or character can explore these other boundaries, such as the ocean, outer space, the microscopic world, etc.

I dunno – I like the idea (as you already know, Disk), but I think it really ought to have a few more guidelines as to what it should be about. Like, a jumping-off point. In my experience it's much easier to write if you have a jumping-off point.

^Second.
I'm not great at coming up with ideas, outside silly ghost stories with an awesome anti-hero.

Oh sweet, I'm an example.

I'll write something over the course of the next few days. I don't want to start a whole thing, just a little three to four page short story.

EDIT: Reread first post, and I don't think it's fair for someone who rarely finishes a story to be judging people's plots.

I'll see what I can come up with to help some of you out. Would you all like it to be some sort of a prompt, or a starting sentence/passage?

So because I haven't written a complete story on a message board post-Purge, I haven't actually written, read, or thought of anything with a plot before?

It's not just post purge. From what I know, you haven't finished anything that you're happy with.

There's always room for improvement with a piece of writing, which is why I've mainly focused on making two stories (SOUL and Midnight Hunters) better by thinking about them almost constantly.

For those who missed it earlier, would you all like a prompt, starting sentence/passage, or nothing to help you all out with this thing?

I think if it's going to be a contest, then we should have some sort of prompt. Thay way everyone's kind of on the same level. Make sense?

I actually have my own ideas, so I'd rather not have a required prompt. Something optional might be nice, though.

B-B-B-BURN

Also, an optional starting off point would be nice, but I have a few ideas kicking around in my head.

I have had some ideas in the past about things to write, but I'm reeeallllyyyyy bad at writing, so none of them ever came to fruition. And even then, probably none of the ideas would have been very interesting to any of ya'll. >_<

If you could think up a few optional prompts, that'd be useful. Even if we don't use them, they're good as a starting point to develop new ideas.

I've added three fairly generic prompts to the first post to give you all some ideas. Feel free to not use them if you don't want to. You may also feel free to combine the prompts together if you'd like. You don't have to make mention of using the prompts if you don't want to, they're just there for a jump-start of your imagination.

Hey, Disk, can I PM you with what I have right now? I can't think of a title.

I just started a story today, I called it Apocalypse Front Line.
It's actually pretty lame, my science teacher and friends said they liked it but I seriously don't like my writing.
Plot summary mania!
The army of the end of the world (referred to as The End and led by a possibly other-worldly man known as the General) travels the globe in an unrelenting onslaught until they reach Eastern Europe, where military forces there fight back. Eventually, the fight escalates to a global level (except the places east of the area, which have already been completely destroyed) and causes one last battle and one last chance to save the world.
Woo, but yeah, this is going to take a while to finish, and it may be too long for this contest.

I thought the same thing too, but it just seemed to make sense to me.

I think I need to make a couple tweaks to mine, but I'm not sure.

Any good writers that would be willing to check my story through PM?

Mine is completely ad-libbed, I made it up as I went along.

Ooo, I might get in on this action. Hehe, I'll definitely be not starting until after the next bout of exams, though. I think I might pull a page out of my mostly mental Antithesis story of old and see how that flies. Or at least make up a short story. I like diving into things after they've started :p
