So I hear they're removing all their internet filters, allowing free printing and distribution of religious material and generally giving people more freedom of choice in religion, and freedom of opinion.

So China is loosening it's strangle-hold on it's people. Why do you think that is?

Are they scared of having a bad reputation?
Do they want to make things look good for the Olympics?
Are they trying to take the focus away from Tibet?
Or are they actually listening to the rest of the world and giving the people freedom?

Discuss.

China is rapidly becoming a new America... all they need now is a republican government.
Think about it, they may look bad now... outsourcing, pollution... but it's very similar to what the United States has been doing.
I say they're attempting to protect their already ruined reputation.
...put down the nukes, plz.

Probably that... I just hope they keep it up after the Olympics.

I agree with this.
I have a strong suspicion that they aren't loosening as much as they say they are, too. They probably just doing all of it for 'show'.

I hope they're being like the annoying kid that eventually gives up but I think it's more for show. Behind the velvet lies (there's a truth as hard as steel) there's probably the same-old same-old crap going on.

China is rapidly becoming a world superpower. In order for that to happen, they have to allow more freedom to their people in order to gain the respect of every other nation, as well as create economic ties with the corporations that produce and sell some of the things they have banned.

In the future, the US will no longer be a super power, but will still act like we have a say in the world, (Like France). China will take the place of the US and will eventually begin running world protection, and would actually succeed at it.

I, for one, welcome our new Chinese world leaders.

Sweet. I suppose we don't need to speak Chinese on the internet though, right?

Jeez, what happened to the early nineties, when everybody thought Japan was gonna take over from America as the next superpower? I wouldn't have minded that nearly as much as all this China crap.

I think China's got a looooong way to go before they get all their ducks in a row. They're doing a lot of self-destructive dealios at the moment that are paying off in the now, but are going to become seriously problematic in the future (the least of which is the complete and total lack of women because of the one child act, which all the boys will love when they're old enough). From what I've been seeing in the news and on the web about their policies, I have serious doubts on them pulling through with their censors. Just yesterday they said specifically they weren't and now today they are? I think they're lying through their teeth, and that's about it.

Listen, would you rather have Weeaboos take control, or someone who doesn't have any connection with them at all?

Looking at the way China runs things, I'd say the Japan people wouldn't be so bad.
My grandfather (and my wife's grandfather) probably agree with you more.

I remember hearing that There's some China based MMORPG where making a character that isn't your actual gender is punishable by jailtime
