Hey, hey!
Thanks to Rusty, I have come across K7.net, which allows you to have a free phone number and answering machine set up*. This means that you can all call into a wonderful answering machine to leave me messages which I will upload to here at one point or another!
InterruptorJones once set up a system similar to this for users to send in their voicemail on the now-defunct "Tell What U Think" Day.
However, before I give you all the number and send you on your merry way, I want to you know several things that are fairly important (underlined things give you the main idea):
- *While this is free for me to set up, it is not free to those of us who decide to call the number. I don't think there are any hidden charges, but you will probably have to pay a long distance fee that will obviously go up with the amount of time you spend talking to this thing. As a reference, this answering machine is based out of Seattle, Washington.
- Because the messages and faxes you send to me will be sent to my email account, I will be able to see your phone numbers. I promise to you all that I will not use your phone numbers for anything. There are some ways to block caller ID from showing up ("Curses!" cries Disk), though I don't have solid knowledge of any of the methods.
- Your messages are allowed to be up to five minutes in length.
- If you are of the younger variety, like below the age of 13 or something, you may want to have parental supervision when calling this thing. I honestly don't care, but I don't want your parents wondering why you're calling some dude with the name "DS_Kid".
- I may upgrade this answering machine in the future to be toll-free to you all. I don't have the money at the moment to do it, though.
- At least one call must be made every 30 days. If a call isn't made in that time frame, then the number will be deactivated.
Now that that's clear, I will provide you with the phone number:
(206) 666-4261Make sure to dial it correctly, or else you may call some random person who I don't want to hear about.
EDIT: You may or may not have to dial a "1" in front of the phone number. I was fine without using the "1" (and the number is across the United States from where I am), though Einoo appeared to experience an issue without using it.A few more interesting things that aren't as important (underlined things give you the main idea):
- Feel free to say anything to the answering machine, though try to make it Forum-appropriate. Any messages containing naughty words will have a notification by them.
- While you don't have to, it'd be nice if you mentioned who you are (user-wise) in the message.
- I will try to change the voicemail on a fairly regular basis. One that I want to accomplish using is the Mentos answering machine parody from the Perfect Kirby series, but it appears to be a few seconds too long.
- I will upload the messages (or faxes, if you're weird like that) to this place on a relatively regular basis. I'm still determining what would be the best way to upload these. I was thinking of SplashCast, the website that IJ used to present his messages, though I'm not familiar with the program. Despite my issues in the past with them, I may just use Putfile
If you have any questions or suggestions for this thing, then please be sure to tell me!Now go ahead and call!
