I think it'd be cool to have media tags so we can embed videos and music and stuff. Does anyone agree/is this possible?

I'm for it and I know it's possible with phpBB3.

Meh....There is some way it could be done, but I haven't a clue how. I relay that crap to Stu.

Also, the music one could become a pain. What if a song is embedded that sucks or some people hate?

Embedding video would be a good idea for the YouTube thread, but I would avoid the music thing. Unless you are thinking about a forum music player like they have over at SI.

I'm more in favor of the videos than the music. While lurking over at Fanboys I found where they had it, and it just made life hectic of remembering to turn my sound off when i visited. It was fun for some things, but mostly I found it annoying.

Well, I don't know how this mess works in phpbb3 but on Facepunch Studios (which uses vBulletin), when you post something in media tags, a box like this shows up.
Image

And when you click it, whatever you put in media tags shows up and you are able to play/pause it. So if that's how it works in phpbb3, then sucky songs and whatnot shouldn't really be a problem. But again, I have no idea how this mess works.

Jello's made some kickarse media tags for SI, including a great Music one where you can control when it stops and starts. So it's possible. But since he's not allowed over here, you're going to have to find someone. Mike could probably do it but he's busy IRL.

By the way, in regards to embedded music, it's easy to block that. Firefox + Adblock Addon = awesome

I'd say that a music player like the one on SI could work out, but if we choose to go the embedded music route, we should probably only allow the first post in a topic contain music. If there were more than one song being embedded at once, then there's a good chance that many computers would start to experience slowdown. Plus, it'd be really annoying.

As for videos, I could see a tag being good as long as it required user input to let it start playing.

And yes, Mike would probably be our best bet for programming needs. Or ed.

I believe the admins who can code stuff (IDC, Stu, Tom) have said before that we do not plan to enable flash embedding or anything of the sort anytime soon.

Sorry.

So sorry.

Serious Inc has flash attachments enabled and whatever, though.

Embedded music is epic at first, but very quickly becomes irritating.

So no, I don't think we need it.

Exactly. Embedded flash/music gets old VERY fast.

Do we want to hear rickroll on every page?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

It doesn't get old fast if the users have any creativity whatsoever

This is the internet.
Creativity on the internet is just like crying in baseball. There's none of it!

Do you really expect something other than a 50x rehashing of old jokes that probably weren't that funny to begin with?

No, it still gets old. Especially if you're trying to listen to your own music and then suddenly HEY it's some other song

I personally don't care if this forum has media or not, but if you're going to have it, you need to have embedded music. That's just how it works. It's a way of life.

I'd be fine with it, as long as nothing starts playing automatically.

Or if there was a "turn embedded stuffs off" button.

But havign them involuntarily come on every time you load a certain page would be frustrating.

I suggested some tags when we first switched to phpBB3, but Dot Com didn't like the idea of the media ones. He said the Wikipedia and HRWiki ones would be good, but I guess no one ever actually added them.

I don't think the head admins would ever go for this.

Also it would just turn into people embedding "Big Balls" into every page.
