The story: You are trying to fall asleep during a heat wave. Unfortunately, you cannot stand the heat. You notice an air conditioner in the window in your room. You turn it ON AND IT MAKES SO MUCH NOISE. So now you are stuck between two choices: unbearable heat or LOUD NOISES. What do you choose?

I prefer heat. For some reason, I can't fall asleep without two blankets pulled all the way up to my chin, even in Summer.

Noise noise noise. You get used to noises after like three days. I have a silver Flavor Flav clock that makes the loudest TICK TOCK TICK TOCK ever.

Noise. My heater already makes ridiculously loud sounds in the middle of the night without warning, so I probably wouldn't even notice.

I probably wouldn't notice the noise, either. I love those types of AC units, though.

Yeah, I'd probably go with noise. It's white noise, so it's not too bad.

The fan in my room makes so much noise because its hanging by some sort of thick rubber bar and the washer and weaving makes it creak, and we installed it about a year ago, so now I'm used to it and can't sleep without some kind of noise.

I don't fall asleep. I enter a dreamlike state after a seemingly endless period of lying down with my eyes closed.

So, sleep, then.

As for me, I LOVE air conditioning and would kill to have one in my room. My fan already makes a ton of noise anyway so there wouldn't really be a big difference.

That's just like me, I think it might be insomnia or something. I can lie down and dream while I'm still awake and conscious, but actual sleep is a lot harder to do.

As for the poll: noise.

I'd grin and bear the noise made by the air conditioner. I can't sleep when it's too hot. I just can't. I'll spend the whole night rolling around trying to find a comfortable position, continually discarding sheets and articles of clothing until I find myself in mah underwears or nothing at all and find its 5am.

I can take noise tho. I've fallen asleep with iPod jams blasting in my ear, nearly full volume.

Last summer when I worked at a camp, I didn't have AC for two months straight. Those were good times.

And I live in men's dorms at school, so there's noise from about 9am to 1am daily.

So both, but that's not a poll option, now is it? :-(

I love sleeping with noise. :)
I can NEVER sleep in heat. It's GOTTA be cold.

Noise. SO MUCH NOISE.

I sleep with my TV and fan on. If I don't turn the fan on it feels a bit quiet, since I've gotten used to the hum.

Same here. I need a fan or I have a very tough time sleeping. My brother is the same way.

Preference, not whatever other word I'm looking for here.

I sleep with two fans on in my room so it wouldn't bug me if there was a noisy AC unit.

Even though I love it to be nice and cool, I don't think I could get to sleep with the noise well enough. If it were for several nights in a row, I'm sure I'd get used to it, but if it were just one night, I'd probably take the heat.

I can deal with a noise, in fact, I work and sleep a lot better with a constant noise than with absolute silence.

By constant noise, i just mean not random outbursts of noise; noise that persists in the same tone and volume for an extended period of time.

I sleep with a loud fan in front of my face every night, so yeah. Noise.

I can sleep through a violent thunderstorm. I can sleep through my alarm. Ergo, I can sleep through the noise.

Besides, I'm freaking tired of trying to sleep in extreme heat due to my parents.

Noise for sure.

Though if I had to pick between extreme heat or extreme cold Id choose heat. The cold is so much worse.

I actually do this. A/C is better than sweating throughout the night, and I'm so accustomed to the noise now that I can't sleep when it's silent.
Yay, Texas.

I'm pretty immune to extreme temperatures, as long as there's not wind/intense sun right on me, but I am much more comfortable in the cold. But I'm also a heavy sleeper and I'd be able to sleep through the air conditioner, so I'll go with that.

I find heat so much more annoying than a lot of noise, especially when trying to sleep.
And sometimes all that noise can just become a numbing, dull sound as you get used to it.
Oh well, I find it pretty hard to sleep normally anyways.
