You approach Satan's wretched city where you behold a wide plain surrounded by iron walls. Before you are fields full of distress and torment terrible. Burning tombs are littered about the landscape. You will join the wicked that lie here, and will be offered no respite. The three infernal Furies stained with blood, with limbs of women and hair of serpents, dwell in this circle of Hell.

Yay!

Same since I'm too lazy to post myself.

First Level of Hell - Limbo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charon ushers you across the river Acheron, and you find yourself upon the brink of grief's abysmal valley. You are in Limbo, a place of sorrow without torment. You encounter a seven-walled castle, and within those walls you find rolling fresh meadows illuminated by the light of reason, whereabout many shades dwell. These are the virtuous pagans, the great philosophers and authors, unbaptised children, and others unfit to enter the kingdom of heaven. You share company with Caesar, Homer, Virgil, Socrates, and Aristotle. There is no punishment here, and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet sad.

Here is how you matched up against all the levels:
(Click on a level for more info)
Level Who are sent there? Score
Purgatory Repenting Believers High
Level 1 - Limbo Virtuous Non-Believers Very High
Level 2 Lustful Very Low
Level 3 Gluttonous Low
Level 4 Prodigal and Avaricious Low
Level 5 Wrathful and Gloomy Very Low
Level 6 - The City of Dis Heretics Very Low
Level 7 Violent Low
Level 8- the Malebolge Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers Low
Level 9 - Cocytus Treacherous Very Low

That's ok....I think...

For the record, very few people actually believe in this. Dante wrote it, not Jesus or any religious figure.

But for fun, I'm going to Purgatory. I was proud of how many times I could check "no." :) Except I'm going to go see Styx in concert in about a month, so that'll drop me all the way down to level 5. :(

Purgatory - Repenting Believers - Extreme
Limbo - Virtuous Non-Believers - High
Level 2 - Lustful - Very Low
Level 3 - Gluttonous - Low
Level 4 - Prodigal and Avaricious - Low
Level 5 - Wrathful and Gloomy - Very Low
Level 6 - The City of Dis - Heretics - Very Low
Level 7 - Violent - Low
Malebolge - Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers - Moderate
Cocytus - Treacherous - Very Low

Looks like faith and virtue are in no short demand for me (according to some simple internet quiz, of course), but I need to work on my honesty a little bit.

Better hope that they play "Show Me The Way".

I remember taking this test probably a year ago, and after taking it again, I've gotten the same results. Gentlemen...I am going to the First Level of Hell.

I got sent to Purgatory. There's no heaven? This is kind of stupid, I've always viewed purgatory as a negative thing (even though I don't believe in it) not the best possible result.

Level | Score
Purgatory | Very High
Level 1 - Limbo | Moderate
Level 2 | Low
Level 3 | Low
Level 4 | Very Low
Level 5 | Low
Level 6 - The City of Dis | Very Low
Level 7 | Low
Level 8- the Malebolge | Moderate
Level 9 - Cocytus | Low

I got moderate for level 8, so I guess I'm a partially malicious, fraudulent panderer. Probably because I have no problem with occasionally stealing or lying.

Purgatory's only a Catholic thing, I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, but I always thought Catholics believed some holy, virtuous and whatever people could go straight to heaven, and the rest went to purgatory, while only bad people went to hell.

Oh well, my ideas are much simpler. Do anything wrong, ever, you go to hell. Otherwise, or if you are forgiven, heaven. There are no levels or anything.

Purgatory is a Catholic thing, and pretty much any of the other layers and crap are just a Divine Comedy thing.

I'm not a Catholic, but here's how I THINK it is supposed to work: you can only go to heaven if you have never sinned. If you don't go to hell but have sinned, you are sent to Purgatory where you are made to suffer, but your suffering removes your sins; the more you have sinned, the more you must suffer. Once you are free of sins, you can then go to Heaven. And then back when the Catholic church had some corrupt leaders centuries ago, they made up the whole "give us money and your dead family and friends can get out of Purgatory sooner" thing.

If there are any Catholics here that could correct me or explain it deeper, please feel free to.

The logic behind Purgatory, if I remember correctly, is that unless you're a saint or something when you die you're still imperfect, and still liable to sin. Purgatory's purpose was to purge you (hence the name) of the temptation to sin so that by the time you get to heaven you're perfected. The idea was rejected by Martin Luther et al because A: there was nothing in the Bible about something like that and B: priests were exploiting the idea as Snowyfox said.

The system laid out in The Divine Comedy went something like this:
*If you were pretty much perfect in life and never sinned you went straight to Heaven.
*If you were a not-so-perfect person but were a good Christian and repented for your sins you had to go through Purgatory for a while, then Heaven. (And if you put off repenting until you were on your deathbed you apparently had to wait a few centuries before even getting into Purgatory proper).
*If you were a good person but weren't Christian you went to Limbo.
*If you were a not-so-good person and weren't Christian, or if you were Christian but didn't repent because you felt your sins were justified, you went to one of the lower eight levels of Hell.

I don't think it's possible to not sin a single time in your lifetime. Especially if we talk about stuff like Lust which is pretty hard to avoid.

Example: Hunchback of Notre Dame (shut up)

Quote:
*If you were a good person but weren't Christian you went to Limbo.

So what goes on in this Limbo place? Because according to that, If I don't turn out to be a murdering rapist or a born-again Christian I guess I have good chances of going to Limbo.

Sure it is. You die before you get the chance. Otherwise, I guess it's believed you go to purgatory at best, for less time if you're good.

Limbo is apparently a place that has no torture or suffering, but is perpetually sad. Not an awful place, but not where you'd want to spend eternity. I don't think it's a part of real Catholicism, though.

Level 3:
Third Level of Hell

In the third circle, you find yourself amidst eternal rain, maledict, cold, and heavy. The gluttons are punished here, lying in the filthy mixture of shadows and of putrid water. Because you consumed in excess, you meet your fate beneath the cold, dirty rain, amidst the other souls that there lay unhappily in the stinking mud. Cerebus, a canine monster cruel and uncouth with his three heads and red eyes, dwells in this level. He growls and tears at the damned with his teeth and claws.

And my matches:

Purgatory Very Low
Level 1 - Limbo High
Level 2 Very Low
Level 3 Very High
Level 4 Very Low
Level 5 High
Level 6 - The City of Dis High
Level 7 Moderate
Level 8- the Malebolge High
Level 9 - Cocytus Low

Aww, I almost got into Limbo but I guess I eat McDonalds too often or something.

Nope, they excised it from the official doctrine last year. Which means unbaptized babies now officially go to hell. D:

Purgatory

You have escaped damnation and made it to Purgatory, a place where the dew of repentance washes off the stain of sin and girds the spirit with humility. Through contrition, confession, and satisfaction by works of righteousness, you must make your way up the mountain. As the sins are cleansed from your soul, you will be illuminated by the Sun of Divine Grace, and you will join other souls, smiling and happy, upon the summit of this mountain. Before long you will know the joys of Paradise as you ascend to the ethereal realm of Heaven.

Well I'm glad I'm a somewhat good person, now for my matches.

Purgatory Repenting Believers High
Level 1 Limbo Virtuous Non-Believers High
Level 2 Lustful Moderate
Level 3 Gluttonous Moderate
Level 4 Prodigal and Avaricious Very Low
Level 5 Wrathful and Gloomy Moderate
Level 6 The City of Dis Heretics Very Low
Level 7 Violent Low
Level 8 the Malebolge Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers Moderate
Level 9 Cocytus Treacherous Very Low

However, we have to remember Christian views vary (I personally see that most people will go to Purgatory when they die, rather than Heaven or Hell)

Yeah, that's not really how it works, but that's probably one of the things that probably should be saved to R&P.
