I know this has been posted on the wiki, but seeing as a mere 5 people have taken advantage of it, I am going to post it again.

We have a chat room for the wiki. Hopefully, in the near future, we will be setting it up so that you can get to it from the web. As for right now though you can only get to it through an irc client. What is that may you ask...

irc stands for internet relay chat, and it's just a way for people to communicate with each other. To use irc you need only to download a client to connect to a server. There are a number of free ones. I know you can use trillian to do it (I am not to sure how to... but I know you can do it). Personally, I use miRC.

All you need to do to chat with us is:

1) Get your parents permission (if you are under 13).
2) Download which ever client you wish to use. I am going to explain how to do things with mIRC, so you may wish to try that first.
3) Connect to one of the many efnet servers and join the channel #HrWiki
(this may be a little confusing, so I am going to walk you through the basics).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First you need to download and install mIRC (you can find it here http://www.mirc.com)
Once you have it installed, open it up. You should see a screen something like this:
Image
click continue. A new window should open up looking something like this:
Image
Fill in the fields however you would like. Nickname is the screen name you are going to be seen as (setting it to your wikiuser name would probably be best, so everybody knows who you are).
Next you need to click on "Servers" on the left-hand side. It will pop up a screen like this:
Image
From the "IRC Network:" box you need to select "Efnet". It should automatically put "Efnet: Random server" in the box below (IRC Server).
EDIT: If you can't find Efnet, then you can put in the information yourself.
Code:
     IRC Server: irc.efnet.net
     Port(s): 6667
You can put whatever you want for the Description and Group.
Once you have done that, click the "Connect To Server" button and you are just about finished.
After a little while (and a bunch of text), you should hopefully be connected to a server. All the needs to be done is joining the channel itself. In the status window (the one where all the text is), type the following line
Code:
/join #HrWiki
This is telling mIRC to look for a channel called HrWiki, and if it exists join, if it doesn't exist create it. That should just about do it. If you have any questions, give me a hollar and I will try to help you out.
Look forward to chatting with you guys.
Stu[/code]
I was in our happy little chat room the other day. Sadly, the only people there were Tom and myself.
Let's get some more participation!
I'm pretty much in there all day from 8am to 5pm, Tom is in there more than he ought to be, and Stu is usually in there during the day. Come on in whenever you want to and someone should be there.
It was wierd being back in IRC. I used to use that when I was in middle school...
It's funny, I still remember a few of the commands.
/me and /roll and whatnot.
I'm in there quite a lot, too. I was out this weekend -- home for mothers day -- but I hang out whenever I have time. Which is usually. 'Cause I'm a bum and done with classes.
I am really not liking this coolchat server. It seems that Efnet is working now (I love my computer). But afternet isn't
Efnet has a few issues though. For one it only lets you set your nick to a max of 9 characters. This isn't too big of a deal, just anoying. Also, efnet doesn't care much for bots. Which is a problem for moderating the channel as well as the trivia channel. Hopefully it doesn't turn into too big of a deal.
If anyone has a good suggestion for a server, I will give them a shot
Stu
Try BeyondIRC.net, I go there for most of my IRC channels anyway.
Come chat with us in the new chat room. This Java Applet connects into the same room Stu set up in IRC. You can either use the method above, or use the new Java Applet.
Join is in http://chat.hrwiki.org
For some reason it won't connect me through the applet.
Is anyone else having problems with it?
Would a firewall keep it from working?
A firewall might block it, but most likely the connection problems were our fault. We've got it working a little better now (hopefully), so please try it again.
Go ahead and leave it on "Random EFNet Server" the first time you try logging in. If you have problems logging in, close all instances of your browser (to reset the Java Applet) and start over, but this time pick the specific EFNet server closest to your physical location. If that server doesn't work, pick the next closest, and so on and so forth.
Let me know if you just can't connect at all, and we'll try to figure out what's going on.
Thanks guys. See you in the chat room.
I am also having problems (perhaps because I am on a Mac?). All I hear is the Braaaaaaaapapapapapapap of my hard drive for about 20 seconds, then it says "applet started" in th progress bar and stops. Help?!?!
P.S. I also get an error message: ClassNotFoundException for netscape.javascript.JSObject
Hate say this, but you may have to find a Mac compatible IRC client. Maybe try ChatZilla?
Ircle is a popular Mac client.
You guys are missing out on some crazy fun...
Quote:
[10:34] <Marzipan> Hi, this is Marzipan.
[10:34] <Marzipan> I'm out doing some very important things, so please leave me a message, and if this is Strong Bad calling to prank call me, can you please do the one where I win the radio contest, 'cause that one's my favorite.
[10:35] <Marzipan> Ok. Bye.
[10:35] <Marzipan> {beep}
[10:35] * _homestar chuckles
[10:35] <_homestar> Oh, hey, Pom Pom.
[10:35] <_homestar> I just heard the best TV joke. OK, so I was watching TV, right? And there was this show with this guy on TV, and he made this TV joke, and it was so hilarious, and um, here is how it went: Um, it was like.... a joke.... and...
[10:36] <StrngBad> {beep}
[10:36] * StrngBad does his best impersonation of the King of Town...
[10:36] <StrngBad> Oh, hello, Marzipan. This is the King of Town. Doo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo.
[10:36] <StrngBad> Uh, I just called to tell you that Strong Bad is not the guy who is leaving you all of these prank calls, OK?
[10:36] <StrngBad> Uh, it was me all along. Doo, diddy hoo, diddy hoo, diddy hoo.
[10:36] <StrngBad> Um, so next time you see me, give me a kick in the face. And next time you see Strong Bad, give him a dollar, why don't you?
[10:36] <StrngBad> And apologize for accusing him wrongly. Um, OK, I have to go eat a bunch of crap, because I'm the King of Town. Doo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo.
[10:36] <StrngBad> {beep}
[10:36] <StrongSad> Oh, hey, Marzipan.
[10:37] <StrongSad> It's Strong Sad, and um, my caller ID says that you called, and, uh, I, I missed the call because I was lying in the dark.
[10:37] <StrongSad> Uh, so, um, excited that you called and I hope you, you call me back.
[10:37] <StrongSad> I'm gonna sit here by the phone until you call me back.
[10:37] <StrongSad> Ok! Bye.
[10:37] <StrongSad> {beep}
[10:37] <_homestar> Oh, hey, Marzipan. It's Homestar, and um, I've got to tell you about this TV joke I just heard, OK?
[10:37] * _homestar laughs
[10:37] <_homestar> OK, OK.
[10:37] <_homestar> So I was watching TV, right? And there was this show with this guy and he was on TV, right? OK. And so he makes this TV joke, and it, and it was so hilarious.
[10:37] <_homestar> OK, it was like.. OK, I can't remember what it was like, but it was a TV joke, and you know how those are.
[10:38] <_homestar> OK, um, I guess I'll talk to you later. Bye!
[10:38] <_homestar> {beeP}
[10:38] <KoT> Ooh, hello, Marzi...
[10:38] * KoT clears throat.
[10:38] <KoT> Oh, hello, Marzipan.
[10:38] <KoT> This is Strong Bad, and, um, holy crap!
[10:38] <KoT> You caught me!
[10:38] <KoT> I've been leaving you prank calls all along.
[10:38] <KoT> Crap, crap, crappity, crap, crap!
[10:39] <KoT> Um, so you better send your boyfriend over to beat me up, right?
[10:39] <KoT> Oh, man!
[10:39] <KoT> Crap!
[10:39] <KoT> Um, and while he's at it, he might as well return the King of Town his Easy-Bake oven which I've had for over three months now.
[10:39] <KoT> Ok.
[10:39] <KoT> Um, Holy Crap!
[10:39] <KoT> {beep}
[10:39] <StrongSad> Oh, hey, Marzipan.
[10:39] <StrongSad> It's Strong Sad again.
[10:39] <StrongSad> You can disregard my last message because I realized that the caller ID was actually from yesterday when I was over at your house and I called my own house to leave a message for myself to remind me to check my caller ID.
[10:40] <StrongSad> So, um, if you want to call me, though, I'm still gonna wait by the phone.
[10:40] <StrongSad> {beep}
[10:40] <StrongMad> IS YOUR REFRIGERATOR RUNNING?
[10:40] <StrngBad> I already told you that one doesn't work on answering machines, man.
[10:40] <StrongMad> IS YOUR REFRIGERATOR RUNNING?
[10:40] <StrngBad> They've got to be home to answer the phone! Stop trying to do the prank call, man!
[10:40] <StrongMad> HELLO?
[10:40] <StrngBad> Come ove---
[10:41] <StrongMad> HELLO?
[10:41] * StrongMad bangs phone on table.
[10:41] <StrongMad> {dial tone}
I come in sometimes, but the only person ever there is Tom.
It's sorta boring.
Yeah, the 9 letter limit on screen names is not good. I get shortened to JamesGeck!
Agreed. I am working on setting up my own server (then we could have screen names as long as we want). However, I don't have any time frame for when that might get done.
Idea: since almost noone ever stops by, maybe its because very few people ever use IRC. Would an AIM chatroom or something like that be more popular. I mean, with AIM you loose the ability to ban people, but still...
edit: sorry for bringing this topic back from the dead, but I thought that if I made this a new topic, it would get locked as spam.
No, you can ban people in AIM, but only if they're from your list.
But about the only admin control you have in a chatroom is the ignore thing.
But, still. It might be interesting.
Well, I have a few wiki people on my AIM Buddy List, and when enough are on, I just make a chat room there on AIM. It's fun, but people usually aren't on AIM (darn your actual "lives"). Also, in case you're too lazy to go to the bottom of my post and click on the "AIM" button, here's my screenname on it:
thefreakyblueman
Surprising, huh?
Actuly, on AIM you can join and leave chatrooms like on irc. Just invite yourself to them. :p
if we do use an aim chatroom, it would probaly be best to keep it to a standarized name, such as hrwiki. That way, people don't have to ask to be invited to chat1874634742234665
well, after scouring the forum, ive managed to come up with 48 aim addresses. does anyone want a chatroom? because i never see anyone on chat.hrwiki.org, so maybe aim's a better alternative. what do you think?
Wow! I can't believe this.
We have not only the "hrwiki" chatroom free, but also "homestar" and even "homestar runner"!
But, for consistancy with the site adress, lets go with "hrwiki"
(I'm actuly in there now, waiting for people to read this post.)
