Both.
A tomato is an oversized plant ovary containing seeds. That defines it as a fruit.
It is also an eatable bulb of a plant. Which defines it as a type of vegetable.

So it's both.

Technically, it's both. Fruit is a legitimate biological term, and a tomato is defined biologically as a fruit. Vegetable, however, is not a biological term, merely a culinary one. A tomato also fits the culinary definition of a vegetable.

The tomato is scientifically classified as a fruit. There really is no debate about it; also, fruits are not a subset of vegetables. Unless you're taking "vegetable" to mean "a unit of vegetation," but it typically refers to the root or stem of a plant.

And, yes, that means both of the Veggie Tales hosts are fruits (cucumbers are also fruits.)

Actually they are.
A vegetable is defined as:
The Macquarie Dictionary wrote:
the etable part of such plants, as the fruit of the tomato, or the tuber of the potato.

A fruit is a type of vegetable. Also a tomato is, biologically, a fruit, but is classified here as a vegetable.

Hmm... According to Wikipedia there are like a million ways to define a vegetable and none of them are really the single correct way. :/

How bothersome. Well at least we can tell for sure that a vegetable is a fruit.

I work in Produce at a store. Which is the fruits/veggies department. A tomato is a fruit. It CAN be classified as a vegetable because of its uses, morphology, etc, but it is technically, at the very base of itself, a fruit.

In case you don't believe me, check the Columbus Encyclopedia, available online:

Or maybe Kitchen Dictionary?
Quote:
Tomatoes are a fruit and a member of the nightshade family (like potatoes and eggplants), but they are served and prepared as a vegetable, which is why most people consider them a vegetable and not a fruit.

Ace knows more about produce than I do, and since I believe in Ace, I'll have to say that it's a fruit.

You know what's even worse? A banana is a fruit, a vegetable, a berry, and an herb.

It's a fruit by definition, but it's a vege'l by usage. Therefore, I usually count it as a vege'l.

No. It's a legitimate poll and a fine topic.
