I say 'soda'. Which is oddly enough represented by that map. The map says my area is 80-100% soda-sayers

Soft drink, or fizzy drink.
Or just drink.
A soda is a type of carbonated water, i.e. soda water.
That's the only time I'd call it that.
Seriously, when I saw American cartoons when I was little, I always wondered why everyone was drinking that disgusting soda water and not coke or soft drinks.
Oh, and don't get me even started on 'root' beer...

Yeah, but the last post in the only other one I could find was from 2005

Captain America's dead, jerk. X-(
Also, I was under the impression that soft drinks were ANY drink that didn't contain alcohol (and alcoholic drinks are "hard" drinks). Not just pop.

Technically:

Soft drink: any beverage not containing alcohol
Soda: carbonated water
Pop: absolutely nothing. What the pfargtl, guys?
Coke: short for Coca-Cola, the most popular brand of sugary carbonated beverage, or the illegal narcotic cocaine.

We as a group of English-speaking nations just suck at naming things.

Actually, since "pop" is the only word that refers to sugary carbonated beverages and nothing else related, it's the most logical choice. Luckily tho, real languages aren't based on logic.

I like how no one has mentioned yet that some people call it soda pop.

Anyways, I call it pop cause soda also means baking soda and its just weird if you drink that.

No, "drink" means alcohol. That's why you need the word "soft" to distinguish soft drinks from alcohol.

Also soft drink is only carbonated non-alcoholic drinks. Cordial, water, milk and stuff, those aren't soft drinks.
They even had that add for flavoured milk once that said "a soft drink, it ain't".

It varies between "coke" and "soda".

That said, I'm going to invent a really addictive drug and I'm going to make sure its most common street name is "pop" and you people in Canada and the Great Lakes and all those other cold uninhabitable places are going to feel really silly.

People who say "soft drink", of course, don't need my help in feeling silly.

Carbonated water is seltzer.

Seltzer.

Soft drink is a stuffy pretentious version that only rich people and fancy restaurants use. I've never even heard of coke being used as a name for all sodas. And I've always associated pop with the south, although the map proved me wrong.

Also what about "fountain drinks"?

Its only referred to it as that when its in a large quantity that you can continually get more of at a restaurant. Kind of like a water fountain for pop.
