Oh god, I lol'd

Anyways, to elaborate my point on why "Christian Rock" is an oxymoron, Rock music and (most of) its subgenres are founded on rebellion, almost a direct opposite of Christian values.

Not to mention heavy un-Christian points in most awesome rock/metal songs. Except it's a matter of interpretation like the Holy Diver cover...

I do think it's possible for one to enjoy a certain type of music without embracing the worldview and the attitudes behind it. One can question whether it is an appropriate medium to convey the Christian message, though.

I'm not a fan of Christian Rock myself. I was years and years ago, but I began to notice that many Christian artists were just fail copies of secular artists, and many of them didn't have that strong a message to start with. As Rich Mullins once told my Hebrew professor, "They never read a book, and only make Christian music because they can't make it in the secular market."

My thought is, if I want to listen to a particular genre of music, I'd just as soon listen to artists who can do it well. If I want music with a Christian message, I'd just as soon listen to Renaissance chorals or Sacred Classical music, like Arvo Part.

But this isn't really a tread for discussing Christian music. If there is any need to further discuss it, I'd suggest contacting a Mod of this thread and ask them to split it off and toss it in R&P.

EDIT: I can take a hint ;) - Inv.

I'd always thought anti-semite meant discriminatory against Jews...

Yeah, "anti-semite" applies to hatred against Jews, or (much less often) both Jews and Arabs. Also, as AbuGrape subtly pointed out, the word is "anti-semite", not "anti-semitist".

And you wonder why people don't like you...

But seriously, I bet 90% of all the Christian groups out there aren't even religious. It is real easy to go out on stage and sing a few song about Jesus and collect a million dollars. The reason is they couldn't cut it in the mainstream music market, so they went to a genre that is easy to get into and make money. Granted that there are some legit groups and singers, but not as many as some would think.

What's the gripe here? Does this really belong in R&P?

Look, Christian rock is not a good-sounding genre of music in my opinion. Deuce is not Anti-Christian for having an opinion about Christian rock. I mean, I know lots of people who don't like Christian rock. Most of them are Catholics. Don't be so offended.

Christian rock can be one of two things.

1. A bad idea done right.
2. A bad idea done wrong.

I don't like the idea of people rocking out to Jesus. It's not so much the fact that I'm an atheist as it is the fact that JESUS IS A LAME THING TO ROCK OUT ABOUT. But some bands actually do it right; they make respectable music, and they make it a bit more subtle than "JESUS! OH MAN, HE SURE IS AWESOME~ LA LA LA JESUS"

BTW, atheist rock is also a stupid idea. *eyebrow raise*

Here's my opinion.

In the tons of Christian Rock bands (Which, by definition they are rock), there's only a few I actually like. Most of it is total crap, both soundwise and theology-wise.

How to make Christian rock:

METHOD ONE:
1. Find a regular song with words like "baby" and "darling."
2. Replace "baby," "darling," and the like with "Jesus."
3. Slow down the tempo.
4. Add gratuitous amounts of piano.

METHOD TWO:
1. Start your song like a Bon Jovi ballad.
2. Sing about normal things for 30 seconds - 1 minute.
3. Sing something along the lines of "Christ is God. God, God, God."

Wasn't that a South Park episode?

I generally agree with all this though. With most Christian Rock, at least the songs that I've heard on the radio, they take the worst genres of rock, first of all, usually "soft rock", and then have these theologically wishy washy lyrics that are as artistically and intellectually interesting as any sappy love ballad written by a 2nd grader for English class.

It's not that Christianity + Rock = Auto-Fail. They're all just "doing it wrong" so to speak.

Method one, yes. Method two is a Mike Birbiglia joke.

I dunno, I just dislike religion in my music unless it's satanic metal.

There was an episode of The Simpsons, where a Christian band went secular by doing the opposite: changing "Jesus" to "baby".

I am a Christian, but I really don't like Christian rock. It's all so money based, and you never know which bands are really about praising God, and which ones just want cash. The Chaser explains it better than I do:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c34E1p6cVKQ
I found that hilarious when it first came out as they view hillsong exactly the same way I do.

I'm not even entirely sure what Christian rock is.

From what I understand, it's sissy rock with religious themes, right?

Sounds about right to me, but they also try to make hardcore heavy metal Christian rock.
...Actually the heavy metal Christian rock is not too bad it has comedic value

Heavy metal and Christian Rock offspring sounds awful if they take themselves seriously.

I'm with Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric in my opinion of Christian music. Nobody should be the "Christian version" of any secular bands. Instead I think Christian musicians should find their own sound that they like to glorify God with. For example, David Crowder*Band, Family Force 5 and Joy Electric don't really sound a whole lot anything I've heard before. And even if I weren't Christian I'd probably get into them.

I know we haven't been on the best of terms lately, but I would have to disagree with you. Jesus is the sacrifice for our sins, the One who gave us His Word. God gave us life and just wants us to follow Him. Heck, the book of Psalms is a collection of 150 songs that praise God. Surely someone in this day and age could do something comparable.

Exactly my point. Christian metal is pointless, but my friend is obsessed with it. I say listen to Christian music in church, and leave the good music genres alone. Listening to non-Christian music is not going to suddenly turn me into a horrible evil sinner, and Christian metal is never going to convert anyone to Jesus.
So it's pointless.

EDIT: Simulpost, I was actually reffering to The Noid's post when I said exactly my point

This about sums it up for me.

Except songs of praise don't rock. I respect the idea of Jesus and all, but he's just not a rockin' thing. He seems more appropriate to a different style of music; it's not what rock's about. At all.

Just because he's a great guy doesn't mean he's the greatest topic for rock music. Not at all.

Kind of a different angle on this, but one thing that really bugged me the last time I went to church was how they tried to integrate distortion guitar into things at the "Teen Mass" (which was the only one I had time to go to that week). At the part that's supposed to be the most solemn, I could barely contain my laughter at how ridiculous it was.
