What song is pure awesomeness? What song sends a tingle down your spine? What song evokes a lot of emotion for you? Go ahead and post 'em. You can say how the song makes you feel if you want. Songs that do that for me that I can think of right now are:

Another song I really like is Don't Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith. It usually makes me sad, because it makes me think of a girl I know.

"Free to Go" by The Folk Implosion: Already mentioned it on the "Music associations" thread, but I'll post it again here. May be my favorite song ever. Its percussion section sounds like it was performed on kitchen pots and pans, which, trust me, is a good thing here. Also combines regular drums, guitar, and what sounds like a cello. The lyrics are also really nice.

"Another First Kiss" by They Might Be Giants: Just an absolutely beautiful song. If I were to pick three songs to be serenaded to by moonlight, this would be one of them--the other two, incidentally, would be "Hanging By a Moment," by Lifehouse, and a song called "Whole Lotta Love"--no, not by Led Zeppelin, but a CD-only song by Smashmouth.

"Life Less Ordinary" by some group I can't remember: Yes, I'm terrible. I love this song and don't know who wrote it. But it's really cool. The chorus hangs around me for ages after I hear it: "The night you came into my life, / well it took the bones of me, / took the bones of me, / (something that I can't recall) / and you shook the bones of me, / shook the bones of me..."[/b]

"Renegade" by Styx: I love this song. It starts out very slow and melodramatic and then runs straight into the hard rockin'. Rules my socks, that's for sure! "Nevermore to go astray, / this'll be the end today / of the wanted man..."

"Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones, as covered by Vanessa Carlton: I really don't care much for the original version, but the cover is great! For some reason, I believe it more when Carlton sings it--she sounds more sad, especially when she says this line: "No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue... / I could not foresee this thing happening to you..." That, and I think her version uses the instrumentals better. Be warned, however, that not everyone will like her voice. It's a bit of the whiny side.

And though it's already been mentioned... "Back in Black," by AC/DC. Rock doesn't get more wickedly cool. Australian metal boys, rock rock on!

You;re like, the millionth person who's said that cover was better. But, to be honest, Carlton's voice is pretty annoying. If you want to hear a good cover of that song, check out the one by "The Vines".

Claude Debussy. (1862-1918) He composed my favorite song in the known and unknown world, "Clair De Lune".

Erik Satie. (1866-1925) You must hear him.

And yes, I do love classical music.

My favourite song of all time would have to be Hotel California. It's so soothing, yet at the same time sort of disturbing and mysterious.

To each his or her own, I say. Personally, I found the Stone's original version to be weak in the instrumental department, and Jagger's voice tenuous and too flat for the subject matter of the song. Yeah, Carlton's got an annoying voice, but I find it to be stronger, and it sounds more properly affected. I've never heard any of the other covers, but downloading them all would break my poor computer. Besides, I'm happy with what I've got.

Nice to see that someone else here doesn't find classical and heavy metal to be mutually exclusive. I'm quite fond of Gustav Holst's "Planets" symphony, personally...
