What the H-E-double hockey sticks is CBS thinking?
Segregating teams based on race is almost as dumb as that "Real Beverly Hillbillies" idea they had a couple years back.
My favorite part of this

Quote:
Probst said he and the "Survivor" producers wanted to bring more ethnic diversity to the competition.

We want diversity, so long as we keep them all seperate. What the crap?!?

If separate but equal doesn't work with the Constitution, why should it work in mass media?
I really don't like this idea. It pretty much encourages viewers to root for their own race and against the others. Will this really help the ratings? I mean, this is the 13th season. Only the first two seasons got big-time publicity. I'd like to hear somebody support CBS's decision maybe, just so I can see the benefits of splitting teams into racial groups.

Just one more reason for me NOT to watch the show...now not only are the contestants backstabbing and greedy, they also have the opportunity to be racist! I wonder, how many times will the double standard of "Whites can't say anything racist but anyone else can" will come up.

How many times do people speak on that show?

Seriously, this is dumber than dissing scientology while drawing a picture of Muhammed with your own feces.

Geez, what's wrong with people?

People are talking about it; people know about it; their curiosity piqued, people will watch it; mission accomplished.

They don't care about political correctness, they care about ratings. I'd bet that they'll merge all the tribes after the first week once everyone starts watching, in the hopes that they enjoyed it enough to stick around.

I can see why they did it. It has out attention, doesn't it? But it might backfire and offend people into not watching it. To me, it's completely idiotic.

I don't know, because I've never watched an episode of ANY Survivor show in my life...and I don't care to.

Yeah, stupid idea to institute segregation, even if it's just on a TV show.

I share Martin Luther King's dream of a time when people are judged by the "content of their character and not by the color of their skin."

National color-blindness is my goal. If someone is well-spoken, respectful and polite, I will treat him the same no matter what his race or nationality he is.

Now if, it's a woman, that's another story.

;)

This should be added to the 13th Amendment...

13th Amendment
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction, and we should not make tribes on survivor based on the color of there skin or heritage. Jeez CBS, give it a rest.

I don't think we should change the 13th over this.. These people DID volutarily sign on, and they were free to leave whenever they wanted to.

This...ugh.

I don't want to delve into it.

It's disgusting. I can see why they did it, as stated by ramrod, but...ugh.

This is most likely something they wanted to do to boost falling ratings just so they can last a bit longer on it. I seriously don't care about who's going to survive this season at all, nor who survived the first season.

Eh, it doesn't really offend or bother me much. It's just a game show. They agreed to do this.

Not worth getting upset over.

It would be nice if striving for diversity was more like "I don't care what their race is" than "I want half one race, and half another." I agree totally, CBS is missing the point. As are many others.

Joshua, you are completely right. There is nothing offensive about that. The people DID agree to it.
The only offensive thing to me was what PMG said about non-white people saying things that white people can't say..

OneGyT pretty much summarized what I was thinking about it.

This brings a larger issue to light. You can't force diversity.
I really don't want to get into that, though. My only hope with this thread was to point out how funny that "we want diversity, so we're gonna segregate people by race" idea is.

I think part of the ides they're going for is that, historically, different tribes were fairly homogeneous (i.e., one race)... and as the tribes merge, this represents the removal of those barriers. Or something like that. I don't think that's so bad an idea in itself.

Would it actually come off that way to the average viewer? Probably not.

That's smart, but I don't think that CBS is that smart

Besides the "missing the point" is because they said they wanted to "increase diversity".

In the end it would, because there would be a larger number of minorities involved, and they will merge and become a diverse group.

No one complained when, in the last season, the tribes were divided by age and gender: Older & Younger Men, and Older & Younger Women. Why should dividing by race be any different?

And besides, it's just a game show.

As is, coincidentally, with most points Jitka makes in R&P, I agree completely. It's a stupid idea, but the fact that we are talking about it only shows that their "plan" is working.

So the season premiere was tonight.

I actually liked it. You still have the slackers, Narcissi, jerks, hard workers...every kind of personality on there. The race card doesn't matter. Everybody's hot. ;)

Though I don't like how whites were referred to as "Caucasians". How about "European-Americans"? Scotland is pretty far away from central Eurasia.

"Caucasian" is a pretty standard term for some reason, at least in the United States.

Yeah, I think it's stupid, too. But my mom loves Survivor so much that she'd watch it no matter what happened on it.
