Rockinest player in a modern band

What musician in a band that plays the modern type music contributes the most to that band's awesomeness? Ignore for a second the fact that everyone in a band contributes to the whole and such. Which instrument to do you usually end up listening to the hardest and "rocking out" to, or just enjoy the most to hear or watch someone play? (Singing counts! It's just way down the list cuz I forgot it at first)

I'm pretty sure it's the lead singer that usually gets the most attention.

I love all the instruments in a band, but I think I love the keyboards most. They usually add a really nice edge to the music, not to mention their sounds make the most interesting shapes and forms.

I voted bass, but it's pretty biased since I play bass myself. But serwiously, every band needs a bass! They're like the universal instrument!

From me personally. I think the lead singer gets ignored (ok, less attention) very rarely.

Too bad.

It's sort of natural for musicians to listen for their own instrument in any group that has it. Plus, watch Jordan Rudess play in Dream Theater and tell me he's not the greatest.

I pay attention to the singer most of the time, but I also enjoy the guitar, since I play guitar myself. I pay attention to keybaords a lot, too, if they're prominent enough.

I said singer. It's not what I think should get the most attention, but sadly today it is. In older days, the guitar player would get the awesome attention, due to his guitar skill. In the old days, there was a guitar solo every rock song. The only modern mainstream song with a guitar solo is Lonely Day by System of a Down, which is an awexome solo.

Of course, there are also bands with the frontman as the guitarist/pianist as well.

I love the guitars. I can listen to a guitar solo all day. In fact, some of my favorite songs are just instrumental. No lyrics at all. They're so great.

The only pop artist today that I see with real singing skill--and I mean REAL skill where they don't have to go in with pitch modifying software and all that--is Josh Groban.

Any kind of keyboard, usually a synth, r0xx0rs the s0xx0rs. I think I rock out to synths more than to guitars.

Well, there is singing skill, but you can't play 6 notes at a time with your voice, as with a guitar. And you can't really call anything a singing solo, because basically every pop song focuses entirely on the singer.

I always listen to the lead guitar part. Then rythm, bass, drums, vocals, and then anything else

Oh, drums, for sure. I mean, just think of music without drums. It would be a total mess, with guitars running all over the place. Not to mention that watching a drummer play is awesome.

I dunno....I've heard a LOT of music work without drums before. There are a lot of crazy cool bands out there that don't have drummers/have a lot of songs without drums.

I'm just gonna go with the lead singer. I play guitar, piano, and sing, and singing is my favorite, and I think the singer really adds the most to the piece (but has to work the least).

You joke, but one of my fellow composition majors from college wrote a piece for percussion ensemble that had a solo triangle cadenza in it.

Yeah, that's true, I have enjoyed bands without drums before (Mountain Goats FTW!) But nothing can beat an awesome drum beat in music (listen to something by Sunny Day Real Estate to see where my love affair with drums comes from.)

Today's music could use a little more brass. Back then, there were tons o' bands with saxophones. Now there's only a couple (Yes, Green Day has brass, but none of their hit songs had any brass in them). The only other mainstream rock band I can think of that still plays today with saxophones and trumpets and everything in between is Chicago.

Death metal could use a little more sax.

OH WELL!

Y'know, strings players have to work pretty hard to keep up with everything else... especially in rock bands. Like that guy in Yellowcard, doing flips off the speakers and everything while playing violin... that is really, really hard. Strings players get my vote. That is right arm/left arm action right there... It's hard enough to stroll while playing violin, imagine having to rock out, jumpin' all over the stage while doing it.
