I finally got it to work using GAIM. I think... I didn't try to go in any room, but I was actually able to register my name and all.

Just use chatzilla (A firefox addon). That's prolly the easiest way.

Or go here. I don't like it, and you have to accept a bunch of annoying certificates, but hey, it's what works.

In fact, it's all I've ever used. EVER!! (well, except when I used mIRC back in the mid 90's)

I've tried a couple of different applications. It just won't let me log on to irc.freenode.net.
