This is a constant argument between HHFOV and I. Which is better, Radiohead or Muse?

I'm with Radiohead, obviously.

Muse.

I don't care for either of them, but Radiohead is a band I simply cannot stand to listen to.

Haven't really listened to enough of either of them to make a judgment.

Muse.

I've never really understood the fandom behind Radiohead. They're an ok band, but the aren't the funking second coming of Christ.

I don't really get where everybody gets the "zomg muse is a copy of radiohead" spiel from.

Their sounds are basically polar freaking opposites of each other; Radiohead seems to be more sleepy and drifts from passage to passage transitionally. Muse is consistent, energetic, and filled with operatic grandeur, as well as extreme technical proficiency on the guitar and piano that's unprecedented by anyone in Radiohead.

I rather enjoy the musical stylings of Muse.

I haven't listened to a lot of Radiohead.

This is true if you've heard Radiohead's more recent and popular works, but if you go back to Radiohead's first two albums (before OK Computer), which was well before Muse was around, well, I listened to a couple Muse albums and I thought "this is so much like The Bends era Radiohead..."

No, it's not like the more popular post-OK Computer Radiohead at all. That's completely true.

In full disclosure, I like the pretentious artsy-fartsy faux-techno jibbertyjabber that Radiohead's been doing.

Knights of Cydonia was awesome tho.

Jonny Greenwood isn't a virtuoso or anything but he's pretty good.

I really like both bands, and I don't think that Muse is a copy off Radiohead. (They sounds more Jeff Buckley and Pink Floyd inspired to me.)
But I just want to say that being good at an instrument doesn't mean you make good music. Matt Bellamy may be a great guitarist and have some pretty cool piano riffs (fast arpeggios and such), but it doesn't make Muse any better of a band.
Radiohead are better musicians than Muse, and have a wider range of sounds, almost entirely changing their sound from album to album. They also have subtlety, something which I think Muse forgot. Muse seems to constantly be loud, fast and dramatic at all times with no pauses or alternative bits.
Both bands are original, enjoyable, and interesting, and are miles different from each other. But Radiohead has so much more to offer the listener, especially by way of real emotion, instead of simple "I'm angry", or "I'm sad."
You'd listen to them at different times, depending on what you want, but I suggest if you love music and really want to experience all that modern music has to offer, listen to both bands.

No, god no! You can't judge all of Muse on their latest stuff, loud and dramatic music is kinda new to them. They do the soft songs much better. You have to go right back to Origin of Symmetry to see the raw sound behind Muse, then you can appreciate how they've built up from there.
And if you want to see pauses and alternative bits, Butterflies and Hurricanes. Listen to it.

But I will agree that the songs are often too consistant. Within a single song they don't mix things up enough for my likings, although each individual song may be quite different from any of the others.

I will take one thing away from this discussion: Download more Radiohead. Then I can compare better.

EDIT: The biggest Radiohead song on Limewire was "Creep". That's one of my favourite Muse songs. The song is almost identical except it uses the word "funking" instead of "very".
Which one was the original?

The Radiohead version. Also, I want to get a Muse album. Which one should I get?

Not to be rude, but if you want a clear idea of Radiohead's work, don't listen to Creep. That was an early hit and they've changed their style completely since then. I suggest listening to stuff off The Bends and then maybe work up to OK Computer.

I have heard their older stuff, I own Origin of Symmetry, it's my favourite album of theirs.
I suggest you should also try In Rainbows and Hail to the Theif, as well as OK Computer and The Bends.
Just basically stay away from Amnesiac and Pablo Honey... and Kid A... depends on what you like.
Also, I didn't know that Muse did a cover of Creep? If you downloaded and it's all acoustic, it's actually an alternative version done by Radiohead that has been mislabelled.

^^ pretty much why you should avoid limewire, terrible quality and mislabels.

So now Windows Media Player tells me that the version of Creep I had before is the Radiohead acoustic version, but the "contributing artist" was Muse. Strange, because it definitely said it was by Muse before.

Yeah, Limewire is kind of notorious for mislabelled songs...
